G+ is the bees knees! I really enjoy interacting with some most inspiring and accomplished photographers over there, and I'm sure you'll love it too- see ya there! By the way the only way you can customize the galleries is through Picassa, which is kind of weird but doable. -Nate.

Thanks Joe. I can't find any way of customising the albums but quite like the default format. I'm obviously no expert however.

Kah Kit, I recently signed up for Google+ and am not sure what I'm doing there, so you are ahead of me on that! As far as your Paris album, the photos are excellent (as if I'd expect anything else from you, or at least that you would show in public). I like you layout a lot - particularly the mix of panoramic and other formats. Are you able to customize albums in Google+, or is there a set of layouts to choose from (of which this is one)?

I guess my answer to why I take photographs is because I have always taken photographs. Many of my memories from childhood involve taking photos. I can't really remember a time when I didn't have a camera! I don't took too often at those old images, but when I do, they certainly do bring back good memories.

I guess if you enjoy doing something it is great in theory to do it professionally. However in reality taking photos is only a small part of running photography as a business.

"For me, travel and landscape photography is still a completely self-driven endeavour; I shoot only for myself. If I derive enjoyment from my results, then I am satisfied. If I don’t, no amount of accolades from the outside world will convince me otherwise."

You have hit it right on the head with this statement. I have also always shot for my own pleasure. When people ask me why I don't market myself my response has been that I will lose the 'joy '
That is why I have no desire to post on any sites these days because no pat on my back can convince me otherwise if I am not happy with my pictures.

After reading about Vivian Maier and her posthumously discovered cache of over 100,000 images that no one ever saw it became even more precious that I continue to enjoy this hobby for the sheer pleasure of it.
I realize that I have the luxury of keeping it as a hobby.

Anyway congratulations on your recent accolades. You do inspire me with your words and pictures.

Nice reading, but I'm curious to what made you take the step to become a professional photographer? And what has been most challenging?

Not sure what one has to do with the other. This article is about one's mindset when out in the field. The other is simply a recap of awards I received during the year.

How do you reconcile your statement here saying, "One aspect of landscape photography that I find increasingly tiresome, is the persistent trophy-hunting style of making images."

...with an earlier post stating:-
"It was another successful year in terms of photography contests. [list numerous awards]"

It really depends on your definition of "trophy". Is the trophy the photo itself? (stamp collecting analogy), or is the "trophy" some photography-contest award? Choose carefully ;)

I cheated. I used a q & a for my "bio" on my website because I just couldn't bring myself to talk about myself. Now I have to write one for my first exhibition and I need short and sweet. Thanks for the tips.
