Christchurch – Christchurch

Experience the location that Magic Hour Travelscapes considers the world’s greatest landscape destination – the South Island of New Zealand.
Three years ago I made the best decision of my photography career. Instead of following where many of the top landscape photographers were heading that year, mainly Iceland and Patagonia, I decided to go where nobody else seemed to have any interest in, New Zealand. The portfolio I returned with put my work on the international stage with success in every single photography competition I entered : Nature’s Best, Digital Camera Photographer of the Year, ANZANG, New Zealand Geographic, International Conservation Photography Awards and of course the most prestigious, Veolia/BBC Wildife Photographer of the Year. No doubt the publicity associated with these led to New Zealand becoming a drawcard for photographers around the world in recent years. Still, as far as nature photography destinations go, it remains among the least riddled by tripod holes. The chances of finding never-before-seen views is high.
This 17 night journey around the South Island takes all of the locations where I created my award-winning images and of course many more. The itinerary has been revised since last year’s tour, now treading a circular path starting and finishing in Christchurch. The timing has been designed to take advantage of the autumn colours and tides so that we hit the coastlines in ideal conditions. This is not a mere photo tour but a small group workshop limited to 5-6 people. It won’t be a didactic teaching experience; the focus is on in-the-field experience. Should you need assistance with technique, composition or any other questions, I will be on hand to help. There will be opportunities for us to have mini-tutorials such as when the weather is not cooperating. Each participant will also receive one-on-one review and digital workflow sessions.
Who should sign up for this tour?
This is open to participants of all levels who are enthusiastic about landscape photography. The intermediate to advanced photographer will benefit from utilising my knowledge of the area and ability to read the light. The beginner will have plenty of time during this comprehensive tour of the island to develop all the necessary skills.
Participants should be prepared for early starts and late finishes. Weather permitting, there will be opportunities for night photography. Meal times will be organised around the shooting schedule so some degree of flexibility is required.
A reasonable degree of fitness is expected. Most of the locations are within an easy walk however participants are expected to be able to carry their own gear on hikes for several kilometres a day.
Queenstown and Glenorchy
West Coast including Paparoa national park and glacier country
We will be staying at good quality hotels and motels, mostly rated 4 to 5 star. At the end of a long day shooting we feel that it will be nice to come back to a comfortable room! In the Catlins, we will be staying in nice guest houses. At Milford Sound it will be necessary to stay in private backpacker rooms with shared bathroom facilities.
Accommodation and transport within New Zealand is included. Flights are not included. We can arrange options such as heli-hiking, chartered helicopters for aerial photography and boat rides to see the albatrosses or dolphins, however these are highly dependent on the conditions. We often wonʼt know until the day whether these activities will go ahead. For this reason we have not included them in the cost of the workshop.
Meals are not included within the price of the tour. Some people may wish to eat with the main group, while others may prefer to go it alone. We will recommend some of the eating options at each location and give participants the flexibility to choose something that suits their tastes and budgets.
The price per person is AUD $6500 based on single occupancy. For those sharing a room, a discount of AUD $1000 will be applied to the total.
To confirm your spot on this tour, a deposit of AUD $2000 is required. Full payment is due 90 days prior to the departure date of the trip.
